What is a Heavy Rigid (HR) Truck Licence?
A Heavy Rigid licence allows you to drive trucks and buses with three or more axles and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 8 tonnes. It’s a step up from a Medium Rigid (MR) licence and a pathway to advanced Heavy Combination (HC) or Multi Combination (MC) licences in the future.
There are two HR licence classes you can choose from:
- HR Open (Unrestricted): Trained and tested in a road ranger gearbox. Requires double clutching and advanced skill, but once successfully completed, you can drive any HR vehicle.
- HR (B) Restricted: Trained in automatic or synchromesh gearboxes. Easier to learn, similar to a standard car licence, but restricts you to HR vehicles with these transmissions.
