Queensland’s roads are powered by heavy vehicle drivers—without them, freight stops, supply chains break, and communities feel the impact. Whether you’re looking to start a new career, upgrade your licence, or increase your earning potential, an HR, MR, or HC truck licence is your gateway to opportunity.
But the process can feel overwhelming. What are the requirements? How long will it take? What’s the cost? And which licence class should you choose?
This guide takes you through the process step by step—from eligibility to application—so you know exactly how to secure your heavy vehicle licence in Queensland. Along the way, we’ll share resources from KMS Driving School and key official sources like the Queensland Government.
Understanding Licence Classes
Before you dive in, it’s critical to understand which licence class you need. Each licence determines what kind of heavy vehicle you’re legally allowed to drive.
- Medium Rigid (MR): Vehicles with two axles and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of more than 8 tonnes. Think small trucks and buses.
- Heavy Rigid (HR): Vehicles with three or more axles and a GVM of more than 8 tonnes. Includes larger trucks, coaches, and articulated buses.

This test covers:
- Heavy vehicle safety rules.
- Fatigue management.
- Load restraint.
- Road rules and stopping distances.
You can practice online through the Queensland Government practice test portal. Providers like KMS also supply study guides so you walk in prepared.
